Birs...Dinner with the family

Walked to Raday Ut looking for a dinner spot, most appeared to be cookie cutter Hungarian, some even had "Tourist Menu" boards in the windows. The first place we walked by was empty but their menu looked different and after walking several blocks we turned around and walked into Birs, Hungarian for quince. More Hungarian.

Stefan the owner greeted us, he suggested we sit inside as it was cold and rainy.
He immediately brought us some interesting bread sticks and asked about drinks, I ordered water, not still, and Lisa asked about tea. We knew we were in for an adventure when Stefan described the different tea's available in flourishing detail.

The place had been open for a week, he was very passionate about having a different menu, everything was fresh and purchased from local farmers.

The menu was on a chalk board, see pic, he made, and we followed his suggestions. Wild Garlic soup, House Feature Salad with Grilled Chicken and Malac, suckling pig, with roasted potatoes. All were excellent. This is only part of the story.

Stefan's father-in-law is Peter Marcus a well know local sculptor, see pic, he was wandering around the restaurant and we visited. He showed us a book of his sculpture and he invited us to a show next week-end. He works primarily is bronze and cast aluminum.

Andrea is Stefan's wife. Stefan is Romanian and they met there while she was studying art. Now she helps in the new restaurant venture. We also met 2 year old Eva, see pic, we both like tapioca pudding.

Stefan brought Quince Schnapps to the table and we toasted to the success of their new restaurant.

A very fun and relaxing dinner. We will return.

I wonder what "see pic" is in Hungarian?
