We’ve had a couple of busy days here in Budapest. We have been showing Clayton a, round the city and the surrounding area. On Wednesday we walked the city and visited the Cathedral area, the Great Synagogue, where I think Clayton enlisted in the Israeli Army or something. We had coffee on Vaci Utca, a late brunch in the Jewish Quarter, good hummus somewhere and then dinner at Birs Biszto. While we were in the plaza near the Synagogue we met two nice Jewish boys whose mission was to perform a tefillin ritual on as many able bodied Jewish men as possible, sort of a Mormon mission thing without the bicycles. They had a little booth set up and were actually very nice, no catches, they weren't asking for money. In between we headed to Buda to check out Castle Hill, rode the funicular, the subway, tram and the funny little castle hill buses. It was a tour designed to spot places we may go back to after the Vienna/Prague trip.
In Budapest there are museums everywhere. There are art museums, history museums. Science and technology museums, a catering museum dedicated to the art of keeping Sterno lit, a museum dedicated to drinking, I’m not sure what, a postal museum and plenty more to tempt your museum going desires. There are over 40 art museums in Budapest. And only one catering museum, that just doesn’t seem right. We walked bridges, looked at plazas and spires and checked out the funny cars on the streets.
Today we, actually Lisa, had to return to the Immigration office to have her picture re-taken. It seems her hair was sticking out too far on the sides. So we started the day with a tram ride, a bus ride and a nice long walk. Lisa had to meet a student at ELTE so Clayton and I went to breakfast and we met up later to head toward the Danube Bend for lunch. We ended up in a very strange little garden café in Szentendre but had a great lunch while Steve the owner regaled us with his confusing knowledge of American jazz. We did not know that Louis Armstrong died on July 5th. I’m not sure what year but Steve knew it was July 5th. We ended the day with a HEV and a subway ride.
Anyway, saw lots of sights, Lisa fixed a great dinner, turkey from giant Hungarian turkeys, slaw from the slaw lady, excellent potato salad and szuper appetizers. Here are some pics from the last 2 days.
